Lady Mary finally Marries!

All Downton Abbey fans have been enthralled in the will they won't they storyline between Lady Mary and Matthew and last night saw the pair finally walk down the aisle!! The joyful and uplifting union of the couple has been much anticipated, but not as much as Lady Mary's dress... and she did not disappoint! Yes, it's a modest affair but we couldn't fail to notice the striking resemblance to the dress that Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother wore when she married King George in 1923. It's a simple ivory column design with a satin sash drawing in below the waist and sheer, long sleeves. It's finished with a jewelled headband and a cathedral length veil.

Not only is it hugely representative of wedding dresses of that era, there's certainly a trend among the aristocracy and royals for covering up and preserving ones modesty as you walk down the aisle. Even Kate Middleton opted for sheer, lace sleeves on her Alexander McQueen gown just last year.

Demure dressing with a sense of glamour and femininity from a bygone era is certainly something that is sweeping the bridal catwalks for 2013 and with the release of the film The Great Gatsby - the romantic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel in the New Year we are sure that the bridal industry will be further influenced by this classic era.
